Employer Information Sessions
During an Employer Information Sessions (also referred to as an Evening Presentations), company representatives typically provide a general overview of the company and may share information on their products/services, entry-level job and internship positions, career paths within the company, qualities they seek in new hires, etc. After the presentation portion of the session, there is usually a question and answer time. In addition, many students will also stay to chat briefly with employer representatives individually at the end of the session.
Information Sessions typically are 45 to 90 minutes in length. Some sessions (but not all) will include refreshments, e.g. pizza, cookies, or other snacks.
When and where are they held?
Information Sessions may be held at anytime during the school year, but most occur near the beginning of each semester. Some employers hold an Information Session in conjunction with their trip to KU for a Career Fair or to conduct On Campus Interviews.
The sessions are usually held in Eaton or Learned Halls, but may also be held in one of the KU unions or even at an off-campus restaurant. The time and location for all Employer Information Sessions hosted by the Engineering Career Center are publicized in at least two places:
- A weekly print flyer on the bulletin boards in the engineering complex
- The Career Connections system; simply click on the Events tab and then select Information Sessions. First time users should contact Engineering Career Center at ecc@ku.edu or (785) 864-3891 for a password to the Career Connections system.
Can anyone attend?
The majority of Employer Information Sessions are open to all interested students. If a company is only targeting a select group of students, that information will be provided in the flyers posted around the engineering complex as well as in the Career Connections system. If you have any questions about a specific Employer Information Session, please contact the Engineering Career Center at ecc@ku.edu or (785) 864-3891.
Will I get an interview if I attend?
It's possible but should not be the only reason for attending. Employer Information Sessions offer students a chance to expand their knowledge about a company and industry as well as an opportunity to network with employer representatives. If an employer planning to conduct on campus interviews the next day has open slots in their interview schedule, they may consider filling those slots from students in attendance at the information session. Students who have a copy of their resume with them could have a slight advantage in being selected for open interview slots.
