Cramped for space

Tuesday, 2 August 2011 8:48 CDT

Hi, over the past several weeks we have been migrating over to a new storage solution. You perhaps remember the emails that were sent out in June. Well we are finishing up the last few users and one of the disks has run out of space. We were alerted of this early this morning and have begun the process to increase the space, but it's a lengthy process.

You might be wondering who is affected, if your username begins with a "C" or "D" then you will notice that your "U" drive is just about full. We are working on resolving this as fast as we can, please bear with us. In the meantime, if you are having any issues, please do not hesitate to submit a ticket, and we can update you when the issue is resolved.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

If you receive this email in your inbox, please DO NOT respond or follow links to it. This email is a phishing scam, trying to gather user/pass information form people.

This is not a legitimate email from anybody on campus, please keep in mind that nobody within IT will ever ask you for passwords.

Thanks,

ProE WildFire 3.0 M040 and Windows 7 slow screen refresh

Friday, 15 April 2011 15:39 CDT

Proe Wildfire 3 is installed on nearly all the lab computers in both Learned and Eaton. This software appears to have some issues rendering parts on current hardware. The reason is due to the age of the software, until Wildfire is upgraded to at least version 5, this problem will persist.

The workaround is to create a file called config.pro and place it within the start in directory for Pro-E. There is a single line in the file and it is as follows:

graphics win32_gdi

Once this file is loaded by the software it bypasses rendering the parts through the GPU and uses the CPU. This workaround should only be applied if you are experiencing this issue, as it has the potential of causing other issues. It is not recommended to use this setting if you are working in production and are actually attempting to design and test a real part.

Maple License Server Inaccessible

Winter Break Changes 2011

Wednesday, 22 December 2010 11:00 CST

When the students go home, we go to work.  We are currently in the midst of making some significant upgrades and changes for the School of Engineering computing environment this winter break.  We are updating hardware, operating systems, and major applications for our computing labs and data center to be ready for the Spring 2011 semester.

Hardware Upgrades

desktop-optiplex-960-overview2

We have just completing replacing all of the computers in the Computing Commons.  The new hardware is a considerable step up from what we had this last semester.  We have gone from four year old machines with 6 year old monitors to brand new everything.  This includes forty-eight Intel Core I-7 (4 cores) desktop machines with 4 GiB of RAM and ample hard drive space, 22” 1080p wide screen monitors, and even new keyboards and mice that will remain clean for all of ten minutes.  What this means to you is faster logins and significantly increased multitasking capabilities.

In addition to desktop hardware, we will also be upgrading the hardware for our file server cluster.  Notification has been sent out as to the date that will be occurring.

Software Upgrades

Autodesk_Logo_1We didn’t stop at hardware upgrades.  We will also be upgrading several common applications to their most current versions.  The primary upgrade that is occurring is an upgrade for our entire Autodesk Suite of applications to version 2011.  Upgraded applications from this suite include:

  • AutoCAD
  • AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Revit MEP
  • Revit Structures
  • Revit Architecture
  • Inventor
  • NavisWorks Freedom
  • NavisWorks Manage

In addition to Autodesk, we will be upgrading Punch! SharkFX from version 5 to version 6, and migrating from Fluent 6 and Gambit 2 to Ansys Workbench 13 which will include Fluent 13 and ICEM.

PiXiEs Retired

Thanks to our extensive hardware refresh in the labs, we have replaced the PiXiE machines with standard Windows machines that have all of the same software as every other machine in the Eaton computer labs.  They had a great run, but with our increased hardware resources, those spaces will be put to better use with full computers.  If there is enough demand we may create some printing kiosks in order to fulfill quick printing needs.

SSL Update

Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:17 CST

The certificates that we use to encrypt the connection between you and our web servers have been updated. If you were connected to one of these servers during that time you may have received a security notification telling you that the site could not be trusted, you can safely ignore that. All servers are updated and you should not see that message again.

Thanks,
