Service Offerings
-
Computing Labs
The School of Engineering and its departments provides several computing labs for academic work.
There are over 250 available computers that are available for use and installed with all of the software you may need to complete your coursework. There are 140 machines running Windows available to all engineering students in Eaton with the remaining 100 or so machines being split up for departmental use. See our Computer Labs page for locations, installed software, and rules governing the labs.
-
Printing
We offer free academic printing services for all engineering students through our computing labs and plotter and color printing request form.
These print services include color and large format printing, but are restricted to course related printing. However, if you need a poster printed for your research, we offer that service at a minimal charge of $6.50.
In addition to academic printing services, we offer local printer support for staff, faculty, student groups, and research groups via help request for over fifty networked printers and countless directly attached printers.
-
Web Hosting
We offer Web hosting, design, and content editing services for every department within the School of Engineering.
We previously offered hosting services for student groups, faculty, and research groups, but we no longer do so as these services are better offered by other groups within the University of Kansas.
If you wish to have a personal site, KU offers personal hosting with an address of the form: people.ku.edu/~[your online id]. To enable this, you simply need to turn on the service by logging into myidentity.ku.edu and adding the Personal Web Space service to your account. Additionally, that page will offer information on how to connect to, and setup your Website.
If you are student group seeking hosting, the Student Involvement and Leadership Center offers 200MiB of space on groups.ku.edu. You simply have to have a registered student group and send an e-mail to orgs.ku.edu.
If you are a researh group/lab or any other organization (including a class) seeking Web hosting, you can request hosting by completing the Information Technology Account Request Form with your group's specific needs.
-
Plan of Study
We develop, run, and maintain the School of Engineering's Plan of Study application used for planning and acquiring any graduate degree within the school.
For specific information, feature requests, or bug reports please see the graduate student area of the Website or contact the graduate programs group directly.
-
Shared Network Storage
We offer large amounts of shared network storage to staff, faculty, research groups, and academic groups for any file sharing needs they require.
This service is offered via Windows shares (Mapped drive letters) through our storage area network. Data placed in these shares are regularly backed up.
If you require access to an existing share, or wish to create a new shared storage area for your group, please do so by submitting a help request. This shared storage is available off campus as well via KU Anywhere. Please see our knowledge base for instructions on accessing it.
In addition to our shared storage, the Univerity offers Hawk Drive. Hawk Drive is a combination of both personal and shared storage, and gives everyone access to 1 GiB of shared storage that can be shared with both on and off campus users. We have provided instructions on how to share files at our knowledge base.
-
Personal Network Storage
We offer personal storage to all members of the School of Engineering, including staff, faculty, and students.
This storage space is offered as the U drive, and on managed computers the Desktop and My Documents are also kept on the U. This data is backed up regularly, but students and employees who do not remain actively enrolled/employed will have this data removed at semester breaks. Your data is also available remotely via SFTP (see Remote File Access section).
This storage space is not limited in size, but abuses are actively monitored.
In addition to our personal storage, the Univerity offers Hawk Drive. Hawk Drive is a combination of both personal and shared storage, and gives everyone access to 1 GiB of shared storage that can be shared with both on and off campus users.
-
Application License Services
We offer application licensing for academic and research software that requires server based licensing.
This includes license servers such as FlexLM or USB dongle type software licensing schemes that can allow one or more different users to be accessing the software at a time. If you need this service for an application you are using for research, let us know, and we will be happy to help you get it setup.
-
Sharepoint Hosting
For intergroup collaboration, we offer Microsoft Sharepoint Services.
Sharepoint offers shared calendars, documents, todo lists, and Wikis. You can access this service by going to our Sharepoint site (accessible anywhere), and if you do not currently have a sharepoint site setup, please request a group to be setup on the system. You can also request access to an existing group the same way.
-
Remote File Access
We provide off campus access to all of storage facilities via multiple mechanisms.
If you are an employee, you can access all of your personal and shared storage by using KU Anywhere and following the instructions listed in our knowledge base for getting everything setup.
If you are not an employee, or you are unable to use KU Anywhere, we provide access to our storage via SFTP at sftp.engr.ku.edu. You can use a client such as WinSCP (Windows), FileZilla (Mac), or GFTP (Linux/UNIX) to access your data. Just use your KU Online ID and password with the aforementioned sftp.engr.ku.edu as the server. See our instructions for more information.
-
Software Development
We provide an extensive amount of custom written software for both maintaining our system and Web applications.
We make all of our source code available via our Trac site to anyone with a KU Online ID. We generally write software in Python, Powershell, and VBScript, but are capable with several other languages.
Although we generally do not provide contract type software development, we can—and do—write software to meet School and Departmental needs. If you think you are in need of a custom Web application, please feel free to make a request and we can help you determine whether we can provide this service via an existing solution, or if there is a need to write a custom application.
-
Desktop Support
Supporting desktops is one of our primary tasks. We provide general computer support for staff, faculty, and computing labs for most departments within the School.
The exception to this are the EECS, CP&E, and Mechanical departments. Those departments employ their own desktop support staff. To contact them for support see their respective Websites or ask their departmental receptionists.
Desktop support is provided via a help request and includes any problems or questions regarding Windows, Office, anti-virus, application installation or hardware issues. In general, the only problem we are not equiped to handle are application specific problems (i.e. AutoCAD is throwing an error) which should generally be handled by contacting the vendor directly or using our Community Support option for peer to peer assistance.
-
DNS and DHCP
DNS and DHCP services are offered by the School for providing access to the network and Internet. If you have a machine that is unable to access the network, we are happy to assist you in getting it up and running.
-
AutoDesk Inventor Content Library
We provide an AutoDesk Inventor Content Library server for access to thousands of parts.
The server is at autodesk.soecs.ku.edu, and is configured for "Read-Only" access. If you require additional access (i.e. the ability to add parts to the library), submit a request and we can get that setup and running for you. For information on accessing this through Inventor 2010/2011, please visit our knowledge base for a video run through.
-
Application Installation and Updates
We provide easy installation of over 100 applications via our "Run Advertised Programs" applet in the control panel of your computer.
For computing lab computers, this option is not available, but the computer should have all of the software you need. If it doesn't, or the application you want is not available in the list of available programs, let us know, and we can either make it available, give you administrative access to your machine, or install it ourselves.
In addition to software installation we also provide automatic updates for Windows, Sophos Anti-Virus, and every other application that we make available (i.e. Firefox 3.5 to 3.6, or Foxit 3.0 to 3.1 etc). If there is an update to your application you want to see applied, submit a request and we will expedite the update process for that application.
-
Virtualization Services
We have a robust and reliable virtualization environment that is available for use.
We generally limit access to this service for internal and departmental needs, but we do provide limited server virtualization to research groups. We are capable of running any operating system with a specified number of processors, memory, and storage to meet your needs.
-
Computer Purchasing Assistance
