KU Engineering Inks Deal With University of Lodz

Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Laurence Weatherley, chair and professor of chemical and petroleum engineering, has initiated the signing of an Agreement of Cultural, Educational and Scientific Cooperation between KU and the Technical University of Lodz, Poland. The agreement comes after a number of years of collaboration with the faculty of process and environmental engineering at the Polish university. The collaboration has resulted in a series of groundbreaking publications in advanced finite element modeling of the behavior of complex multi-phase liquid-liquid reactors.

Chancellor Robert Hemenway signed the agreement on Jan. 23. Professor Jan Krysinski, as rector, signed the memorandum on behalf of the Technical University at a ceremony attended by Weatherley Jan. 9 in Poland.

Working with the Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis, Weatherley and Aaron Scurto, assistant professor of chemical and petroleum engineering, have recently secured National Science Foundation funding to strengthen collaboration with researchers at the Technical University of Lodz in a new project to understand the behavior of ionic liquid solvents. Professor Jerzy Petera's finite element modeling group at Lodz is a key part of the collaboration, which will continue to take advantage of the complementary strengths of the two research groups.

Another component has been the delivery of a series of lectures by Weatherley at the International Faculty of Engineering, which is part of the Technical University of Lodz. The faculty provides instruction in English by international scholars to some of the best engineering students at Technical University. Weatherley's lecture,s given annually over the past three years, have been in the areas of green chemistry and engineering and environmental management.

Weatherley, Scurto and Petera will continue to make visits and have placements at the respective universities for short periods.
