A Note from the Dean: Engineering Learning Communities to Continue

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Dear students/parents,

I am writing to inform you that the KU School of Engineering has decided to continue offering the Engineering Learning Communities for its freshmen in the 2009-2010 academic year.  We believe this program is an integral tool for students to achieve excellence at KU, and we expect it will be a success for many years to come.

Earlier this month, university officials made the difficult decision to end the KU Learning Communities program. The School of Engineering understands that, in these financial times, decisions such as this must be made.  Since 2003, the Engineering Learning Communities have helped our freshmen build the study habits and peer support that can be vital to their success, which is why we have decided to continue the parts of the program we have found are most beneficial to our students.

The Engineering Learning Communities build camaraderie within the School and help build even more than a community. We believe this program helps to build an engineering family that extends far beyond the edge of campus.

Details of this transition are being formalized, but we will strive to provide the best for our students and faculty. We will keep you informed regarding the details of this transition. Please regularly check our Web site at http://engr.ku.edu/prospective/undergraduate/admitted/learning.html for updates, or call the Director for Recruitment for Engineering, Alexis McKinley Jones, at (785) 864-3402 for information.

Sincerely,

Stuart R. Bell, PhD., P.E.
Dean of Engineering
