Scholarships, Fellowships, and Assistantships

A variety of scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships are available through the School of Engineering and KU.

Scholarships
Defined: awards based either on academic merit alone, or on academic merit and financial need. Scholarship awards are applied directly to a student's tuition and fees. Typically, funds left over after disbursements are made are returned to the student in the form of a check.
Fellowships
Defined: awards given to postgraduates to enable them to study a subject at an advanced level. Fellowship awards are disbursed to students in the form of a check.
Graduate Teaching Assistantships
Teaching Assistantships may be available to students through individual departments. Appointments and stipends vary among academic departments, and application for appointment as a teaching assistant should be made directly to the department concerned.
Graduate Research Assistantships
Research Assistantships are available to graduate students through grants from state-appropriated research funds and from federal and private agencies. Stipends vary among academic departments. Those granted research assistantships are eligible to pay tuition at the in-state rate. For further information, contact the graduate adviser of that department.

School of Engineering Scholarships and Fellowships

Chaffee Scholarship and Wallace S. Strobel Scholarship

General Information

These scholarships, for high-achieving students new to graduate programs in the School of Engineering, are used to supplement other forms of support provided by a department. Typically, each student recipient will have a scholarship for one year. Students must maintain enrollment in at least six hours and a 3.00 GPA, in order to keep the scholarship the second semester. During subsequent years, students are generally supported with research funds. Preference for the Strobel Scholarship will be given to students who plan to pursue a doctorate and to students entering the graduate program at the University of Kansas from other universities. Preference for the Chaffee Scholarship will be given to students who are U.S. citizens.

Application Process

The Chaffee and Strobel scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. Award considerations will include the applicant's academic performance (GPA), personal statement, scores on achievement tests, letters of recommendation, evidence of involvement in and commitment to the engineering profession, and an individual's record of scholarly activities. Students interested in being considered for either of these scholarships should contact their department. Each department submits nominations of qualified graduate students by the first week of February to Maureen Mersmann, 1 Eaton Hall. All nominations will be reviewed by the Graduate Studies and Research Scholarship Committee, and recommendations will be forwarded to Glen A. Marotz, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, who will make final award decisions. Notification on award decisions will be sent to departments by the end of February, and departments will send award letters to scholarship recipients.
