School Welcomes Students With a Variety of Events, Activities

Engineering Student Council's Welcome Back BBQ
The start of the fall semester is just around the corner and faculty and staff of the KU School of Engineering are welcoming students, both new and returning, with a variety of events and activities.  Five of the events are highlighted as part of the Five in Four series of events. Freshmen in the school are strongly encouraged to take part in these five key events held during the first four weeks of the semester.  Most of these events are free and most also welcome upperclassmen and graduate students.


New Engineering Graduate Student Orientation

Monday, Aug. 17, 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Spahr Engineering Classroom, 2 Eaton Hall

Welcome Back BBQ

Tuesday, Aug. 18, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Engineering Courtyard between Eaton and Learned Halls

Free for all engineering and computer science students. Hotdogs! Burgers! New Friends! Old Friends! Involvement Opportunities!  Sponsored by Engineering Student Council. This is the first of the school’s hallmark Five In Four series of events.

Freshmen taking part in the Engineering Learning Communities (ELC) meet for an overview of the program and a first chance to meet fellow ELC classmates.

Free for engineering and computer science freshmen. Meet your new classmates and take part in a race across campus. Free T-shirts and prizes. A Five In Four event sponsored by Engineering Student Council.

A free back-to-school bash for all School of Engineering students. Live music, tasty food and “Dunk the Dean.” A Five In Four event sponsored by Engineering Student Council.


Career Kickoff Day

Thursday, Aug. 27, noon to 3 p.m. Engineering Courtyard

Engineering Career Center will host a free cookout and information table that will help all School of Engineering students begin thinking about the job search process, career planning and the upcoming fall career fair.  Come hungry, leave more confident about your future.

SWE Evening With Industry

Tuesday, Sept. 15, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Kansas Union Ballroom

Schmooze with employers looking for eager and capable interns.  Cost is $5 for SWE members, $12 for nonmembers. Reservations due by Sept. 8. A Five In Four event sponsored by the KU chapter of the Society of Women Engineers.


Engineering and Computer Science Career Fair

Wednesday, Sept. 16, noon to 5 p.m., Kansas Union

Dozens and dozens of employers will be at KU specifically to recruit students in engineering, computer science and other hard sciences.  Engineering Career Center has exhaustive details on how to prepare and who’s attending.  Students should dress business casual; come prepared with copies of their resume and be able to talk about their strengths. A Five In Four event coordinated by Engineering Career Center.
