Changes Ahead for Self Computing Commons

Engineering Computing Services is adding new features to the Self Computing Commons in Eaton Hall.

Eight workstations in the commons are being converted to PiXiE workstations that contain only high-demand applications.  The goal is to optimize workstation usage in the commons by providing light and fast workstations.  The PiXiE workstations feature a compact software load that includes only the most commonly used applications.

Programs on these workstations are:

  • Firefox,
  • OpenOffice,
  • MatLab,
  • qCAD,
  • Code::Blocks,
  • a PDF reader,
  • the GIMP (open-source Photoshop clone),
  • and several other basic computer applications.

The PiXiE workstations are marked with a sticker on the monitor frame and the PiXiE logo on the login screen. Students should use their KU Online ID and password to login to the PIiXiE workstations.
