Student Organization Funding

Engineering Funding Advisory Committee (FAC)

Funding for engineering student organizations is awarded through the Engineering Funding Advisory Committee (FAC). The purpose of FAC is to make recommendations to the School of Engineering's Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in regards to financial support for engineering student organizations. This financial support shall serve as partial funding for events held throughout the academic year.

For FAC eligibility in the 2023-2024 school year, each engineering student organization is required to commit to the following:

  1. Re-register your organization in Rock Chalk Central by September 8th, 2023
  2. Participate in at least one of the following Fall Welcome Back Recruiting Events:
    1. Engineers Rock the Block on Saturday, August 20 from 2-4pm
    2. Host a Group Info Session during Hawk Week
  3. Attend 2/3 of general ESC Meetings (occurring on the first Thursday of every month from 6-7pm)
  4. Participate in the Engineering EXPO

A complete application package consists of the following items submitted:

  1. Access the FAC Application in the Engineering Connector by going to your Group's page > Officer Dashboard > Budgeting > Create Budget Request
  2. Completed Budget Formula
  3. Departmental Match Form
  4. Student organization PowerPoint presentation

The application process will be slightly different this semester and going forward. We will now be conducting the entire application process through the Engineering Conductor. Because of this change, please make sure you and your organization are registered in the Connector app before filling out the application.

Application packages will be due on Friday, Feb. 9th by 5pm.

Please send any questions you may have to Micah Borghese, micahborghese@ku.edu.

What is SOMS (Student Organization Meeting Space)?

The student organization meeting space, or SOMS, is intended to offer clubs within the school of engineering a physical space with which to meet, store things, and work collaboratively. The SOMS will occupy Learned 1135 and be split down the middle for two student groups to share. Any and all student groups can apply for consideration to occupy the space with the spring FAC cycle, and considerations will be made by the same FAC committee. The SOMS is only so large, so groups should consider how they may use the available space before applying. Groups who have little or no current permanent space, or are struggling to garner resources from the SOE or engineering departments will be given priority in selection.

How will SOMS Operate?

The SOMS is outfitted with keycard access, storage cabinets, and work tables for the groups who will eventually occupy the space. It is up to the two groups selected for space allocation to manage the space, keep it clean, and share the available resources equitably. The space is subject to infrequent checks to ensure this is the case, and groups should reference the SOMS bylaws to ensure they are operating properly. The space allocations will be re-considered each spring

How can I apply for my student org to receive space in the SOMS?

Use the Google form below to apply for consideration by the spring FAC deadline, Feb. 9. The FAC committee will consider your application and notify you of your status with the spring FAC award letters. Consider the selection criteria outlined in the SOMS bylaws, and how your organization best fits those criteria. Reach out to Micah Borghese (micahborghese@ku.edu) with any questions!

Once a FAC allocation award amount has been released to a group, the funding will automatically be distributed through respective departments. Groups are required to "Match" the amount of allocated funds through outside fundraising. Check-ins will be completed at the end of the fall semester to monitor progress towards "Match" amount. Documentation of match will be required at the end of spring semester.

Please review purchasing guidelines for FAC allocations.
