Ford CEO, KU Alumnus Named Kappa Sigma Man of the Year

— The Supreme Executive Committee of Kappa Sigma Fraternity named Alan Mulally, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ford Motor Company, its 2007 Kappa Sigma Man of the Year. Mulally is a March 22, 1964, initiate of the Gamma-Omicron Chapter at the University of Kansas and a graduate of KU’s Aerospace Engineering program. The award was conferred to Mulally in March at KU’s Dole Institute of Politics.
Mulally joined the KU’s Gamma-Omicron Chapter as a freshman and provided outstanding leadership during his undergraduate years serving as the Chapter’s Grand Master and as rush chairman.
Mulally described his undergraduate experience, “Kappa Sigma and Gamma-Omicron Chapter mean an opportunity to appreciate and learn from a diverse, talented group of people that are committed to lifelong learning and fellowship.” He earned a bachelor of science and master of science degree from KU’s Department of Aerospace Engineering in 1968 and 1969, respectively, and he earned a master’s in Management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a 1982 Alfred P. Sloan Fellow.
Prior to joining Ford, Mulally served the Boeing Company for 37 years. He was executive vice president of the Boeing Company, and president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. In that role, he was responsible for all the company’s commercial airplane programs and related services. Mulally also was a member of the Boeing Executive Council and served as Boeing’s senior executive in the Pacific Northwest.
Throughout his career, Mulally has been recognized for his contributions and industry leadership, including being named “Person of the Year” for 2006 by Aviation Week magazine and one of “The Best Leaders of 2005” by BusinessWeek magazine.
Mulally previously served as co-chair of the Washington Competitiveness Council and sat on the advisory board of NASA, the University of Washington, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. He is a member of the United States Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of England’s Royal Academy of Engineering and a member of the KU School of Engineering Advisory Board.
He is the immediate past President of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and current president of its Foundation. In addition, Mulally is the immediate past chairman of the Board of Governors of the Aerospace Industries Association.
Mulally is a native of Lawrence, Kan., and is a private pilot and enjoys tennis, golf and reading. He joins KU alumni former Sen. Bob Dole and Bob Eaton, former Chrysler chairman, as Kappa Sigma men of the year. Eaton is a 1963 mechanical engineering graduate.
