Engineering Research

Nichols Hall houses the Information and Telecommunication Technology Center, which includes the Radar Systems and Remote Sensing Lab, the Photonics Technology Lab, the Networking and Wireless Systems Lab, and the e-Learning Design Lab. The Center for the Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets, a collaborative research center comprising university, industry and international partners, also has its administrative offices here. It is a Science and Technology Center established by the National Science Foundation.

The University of Kansas is a major research university with a long and successful record of research collaboration promoted through independent and NSF multidisciplinary research centers that focus on common themes. KU is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive University and has been a member of the Association of American Universities since 1909.

Each department and program in the KU School of Engineering has access to modern, fully equipped facilities and laboratories.

The following labs are located on the University's West Campus or at off-campus facilities in Lawrence:

• Center for Remote Sensing for Ice Sheets (CReSIS); a multi-university NSF Engineering Research Center;
• Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis, (CEBC), a multi-university Engineering Research Center;
• Information & Telecommunications Technology Center (ITTC);
• Kurata Thermodynamics Laboratory (KTL);
• Flight Research Laboratory (FRL); and,
• Space Technology Center, a focal point of NASA-sponsored research.

Civil engineering students work on transportation research on Interstate 70 near Lawrence.

Research facilities on the main campus include the:

• Bioengineering Research Center;
• Transportation Research Institute (TRI);
• Infrastructure Research Institute (IRI);
• Biomechanics Engineering Laboratory;
• Tertiary Oil Recovery Project (TORP); and,
• a variety of computer-integrated manufacturing and computer-aided engineering facilities.
