November 2025 Spotlight
Hao Tu
PhD student, Mechanical Engineering
Hao’s research focuses on advancing battery management systems (BMS) — the “brains” behind rechargeable batteries that ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency. He develops innovative algorithms that merge physics-based modeling and machine learning to better understand and manage battery behavior under real-world conditions. His work aims to enable next-generation electric vehicles and aircraft that are smarter, safer, and more energy-efficient, contributing to a more sustainable future for transportation and energy systems.
In his free time, Hao enjoys swimming, hiking, and traveling. Swimming has become a part of his daily routine, helping him stay focused and relaxed, while exploring nature and new places fuels his creativity.

What made you choose KU's School of Engineering?
I chose KU’s School of Engineering because of its strong research in control systems and energy technologies, as well as the opportunity to work with exceptional faculty. KU provides a collaborative and supportive environment that encourages innovative ideas and real-world impact.
What is something that makes KU's School of Engineering different?
KU’s School of Engineering stands out for its strong sense of community and collaboration. Faculty and students work closely across disciplines, creating an environment that fosters mentorship, creativity, and innovation.
What opportunities, beyond classes and research, have you participated in through KU’s School of Engineering?
Outside of research, I’ve served as a Graduate Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant for system dynamics and control systems, gaining valuable mentoring experience. I represented KU at the Capital Graduate Research Summit of Kansas and earned 2nd Place in the Graduate Student Presentation Competition, along with several GEA Travel Awards. As the Student Liaison for the ASME Energy Storage Technical Committee, I help organize networking events connecting students with industry professionals at international conferences. These experiences have strengthened my leadership and professional skills.
