SELF on the Road 2016 - Day 1 (Austin)

Saturday marked our first day of Self on the Road 2016. After landing in Austin, TX we headed over to Iron Cactus for a delicious meal. They proved it’s never too early for dessert, ending the meal with a sweet treat of crème brulee tarts and chocolate cake.

After checking into our hotel and enjoying some free time, we headed to Growler USA. We had a warm welcome from KU alum and mechanical engineering grad, Steven Hurt. He began his career on a technical track working for companies such as CAT, but he ultimately found himself pursuing business ventures.

 

When asked what the secret to success was, he simply responded there isn’t. It’s hard work and taking advantage of opportunities. Keep your eyes and ears open and don’t be afraid to take a risk. Sometimes you’ll lose big but if you keep trying you will also win big. He also emphasized the importance of networking. You never know who you are going to meet and what opportunities they might present to you along the way.

 

Growler USA was a product of a peaked interest in growlers and craft beer and meeting someone by chance that wanted to peruse a business venture with craft beer. The risk and hard work definitely payed off at Growler USA. They feature 100 taps of local craft beer; each glass served by a trained cicerone that is able to give you recommendations and background information about every beer. The drinks are paired with delicious regional food, including some of the best wings around. As we begin our company visits and tours, we look forward to meeting more KU alumni and hearing their stories.
