Biography

Retired Chairman and Chief Executive of Standard Oil Company of Ohio

Spahr was honored for his leadership of the Standard Oil Company (Ohio) and for his efforts in opening Alaska's North Slope oil reserves to the United States. He was chief executive officer and chairman of the board of Standard Oil Company (Ohio). He negotiated a merger with the British Petroleum Co. (BP), and headed the American Petroleum Institute during the Arab oil embargo of the early 1970s. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and attained the rank of major.
