Design Competitions

KU students have won more American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics International Design Competitions than students from any other school in the world.

KU has launched the careers of four NASA astronauts.

KU Aerospace Engineering is an international leader in undergraduate, graduate and continuing aerospace education, balancing theory and practice to best prepare our graduates for professional practice and for higher education.

The Garrison Flight Research Center is a 22,000-square-foot facility at the Lawrence Municipal Airport with hangar space for several aircraft, an AST 4000 fixed-base simulator, a machine shop, and electronics shop. Additional shop and assembly space, along with a propulsion test cell, are available in an adjacent building, the “Hawkworks.”

KU is the lead institution for the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets. The interdisciplinary team of engineers works to develop new technologies to predict how changes to ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica will affect global sea levels.

The Hill Space Systems Laboratory is a new facility where students design, test and build small satellites for launch by public agencies and private contractors. This satellite makerspace features a clean room and provides an immersive experience for students in areas such as space robotics and orbital remote sensing with small satellites.
